Occupy Nashville Chat / Re: a note on feeling appreciated within ON
« on: November 07, 2011, 02:53:18 pm »
I appreciate everyone able to actually "occupy".  I also appreciate everyone who does anything =  if you do what you can, feel good about it.  it's not about comparisons ; it's about supporting the revolution as best you can.

@ newjk: Thanks for your individual appreciation; it's most welcome. Also, I think it goes without saying that every off-site supporter has enormous appreciation for the plaza occupiers! But, while I'm sure you have no intention of making comparisons, that's how it's ending up. Intentional or not, unless you're at a plaza GA in person, you have no voice, no matter how many dollars, hours, days, weeks, you've spent supporting the Occupy movement.

Idea:  Maybe Livestreamers can figure out a way to integrate Virtual Attendance at GA's (dealing with inappropriate responses in much the same way as they would in person).

Do those of you at the plaza (day or night) realize HOW much support you have from those who can't get there?  Many people can't, for many reasons. But that just seems to unwittingly translate into "just send us money and stuff and then shut up." In all this time, there's been no effort to include or organize the voices of all those off-site supporters in discussions and decisions, particularly those made at GA's. Off-site people might get to see a report on what was decided for everyone, after the fact. But that just sends an unintended message that if you ain't there in person, you don't count.

Forums vs. Livestream: These forums are an outlet, but don't actually seem to accomplish much. They're too scatter-shot, with no consolidation of ideas, goals, or feedback. Each voice often gets drowned out by so many other virtual voices talking about so many different things. Maybe that's why Livestream chat gets so swamped; off-site supporters searching for a way to be included in the broader discussions. I'm well aware that IT and moderators have tons of important stuff to deal with, and I think they're pretty amazing. But I wonder if this oversight could really be hurting support for the movement.

@ xsteffix: Thanks for having the courage to bring this up.

I'm sure it's unintentional, but all the focus seems to end up on the campers, as if camping on the plaza is the only goal. They are sacrificing a lot, but so are the people who've spent hundreds of dollars of their own money, and countless hours of their valuable time, to support those campers. Many of the great people I've met in ON do show their appreciation, one to one. But the broader perception is that the "group" only supports those who camp out.

Maybe it's just their desire to get more folks out there. And maybe inadvertent favoritism is human nature. But so is greed. Does that mean we let that nature dominate? Social evolution includes overcoming crony-ism as well as greed. I think the group has to be real careful about how it's being perceived, not just in media and to the public, but among its own members and supporters.

General Discussion / BANK TRANSFER DAY COMING
« on: October 25, 2011, 12:10:40 am »
HOW TO FIND A LOCAL CREDIT UNION OR BANK:
GREAT independent tools here to find a local credit union, or a local bank that's truly local.
It also includes bank and credit union rating tools, so you know your money's safe.
The MOVE YOUR MONEY project:
http://moveyourmoneyproject.org/
HuffPost keeps a whole page dedicated to this topic, and I think that's where the project started sometime last year:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/news/move-your-money

PREPARE IN ADVANCE:
1) FIND a local credit union or truly local bank at http://moveyourmoneyproject.org/
2) SEARCH your candidate banks' websites to be sure they offer what you need (i.e. free checking, savings, whatever)
3) CALL to be sure they'll accept you, membership criteria, your credit rating, etc.
4) SET ASIDE an amount of money that can be in limbo for a week or two.
5) OPEN NEW account with that in cash BEFORE closing Big-Bank account.
6) KEEP enough CASH to function for a week or so, while things clear and get set up.

How about BANK TRANSFER WEEK: Nov 1st thru 5th. You'll get much faster service on a weekday. SOLIDARITY will still be QUITE clear come Monday's weekly bank reckoning!

CLOSE Big-Bank account by FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4th, a business day with longer banking hours.  Bank Transfer Day is technically Nov. 5th, but that's a Saturday, so that doesn't seem to make sense.

Try to deposit cash/cashier's check from old bank into new bank on the same day.

TIP: Ascend Credit Union -- VERY local -- accepts MTSU students/employees/faculty. I went with them over a year ago (to get out of Bank of America!), and I love 'em.

General Discussion / Yikes! HuH???
« on: October 21, 2011, 03:07:10 am »
Yikes! Where did that come from?? I'd bet my right/left ARM that NONE of our MODERATORS would say such things! Are you sure it wasn't just another member???  And from ALL I've seen, EVERYBODY is more than welcome! Plenty of black, white, asian, hispanic, male, female, gay, straight, young, old, educated, less educated, self-educated... Come out to the Plaza and join us, and you'll see! They even use Progressive Stacking at their general assemblies to be sure that all diverse voices get a chance to speak. In fact, this is the MOST DIVERSE group of people I've ever seen working together in one place, for one purpose!! It's pretty amazing, so I hope you won't let a misunderstanding of one member's post get you so upset! PLEASE BE WELCOME!

General Discussion / Re: Libya vs. USA I fail to see the difference....
« on: October 21, 2011, 02:46:28 am »
Basic human rights were denied,
innocent civilians were detained, beaten, and killed,
and Libya’s wealth was squandered.

Yeah, gee, I wish WE could have a country that didn't do those things :P

War Room / Take Back The American Flag!
« on: October 19, 2011, 05:06:17 pm »
The 99% are the REAL Americans, and the flag is OURS!  I've seen talk about a "People's Flag", "flag-waving" tea-partiers, etc. BUT THEY DON'T OWN IT!  I think if tons of occupiers "wave the flag", the whole world will GET IT, in one easy-to-understand visual statement. To TAKE BACK AMERICA, we can start by TAKING BACK OUR AMERICAN FLAG!

Yes, THANK YOU, Tim for your service and sacrifices. Your unnecessary suffering is one big part of why we're all here!

Question:  Do you happen to have a .jpg picture of your flag that you could post? I'd love to see it and can't always get to the Plaza.

Comment:  I kinda think the American people already have a flag:  The American Flag. We need to take it BACK!

Occupy Nashville Chat / Suggest Caucuses
« on: October 19, 2011, 04:52:35 pm »
Yes, and anarchists, of course :)  Good to see some caucuses already forming! Might also add Democrats, Republicans, Green Party, Libertarians, and even TeaPartiers, to the list of possibilities. While Occupy doesn't welcome political leaders as official spokespersons for OWS (which I agree with), some followers of those groups may agree in uniting against corporate greed and political corruption. Just more thoughts. Possibilities are endless!

But to stay focused, maybe some of us could browse through posts to see if there are a few common threads among opinions most often expressed, and suggest caucuses from there.  As long as the opinions support, and agree with, the fundamental tenets and structure of the Occupy movement--as agreed upon by New York/National/Nashville consensus--a caucus might be formed.

General Assembly Minutes / GA Minutes for 10/15

QUOTE=Spuff;1272]Facebook auto-hides posts that it considers spam, and also hides posts that OTHER PEOPLE mark as spam. So if enough people don't like what you have posted and hit the hide/mark as spam button, it'll go away. The admins are not in control of that...

WISH I could've been at 10/15 GA. Saw in Minutes lots of talk about hate speech and against the law and censorship and such. But the internet is still a comparatively lawless frontier, which is great in some ways, but tricky in others. I kinda think that online moderaters have a right and a duty to members (of ANY website) to keep posts ON-point with majority membership. Seems to me that it should be okay for moderators to remove overwhelming, repetitive, openly antagonistic, personal, or grossly disruptive posts, or anything that might be blatantly offensive to the known consensus of the group and the group's purpose. This is a scary issue, and totally unfair to the IT team if they really are doing no such thing. I say innocent until proven guilty, by consensus of the membership.

I REALLY like the idea of enough people being able to mark a post that MEMBERS collectively vote it off (as long as it's one member one vote, e.g. that a post can't be removed by only a few people repeatedly marking it for removal). Do these forums have a similar feature? Also, can a n anonymous poll determine how many members see/have experienced undue censorship here? This whole accusation is awful, and disruptive, and I think we really need to move beyond it. I also thing it's way beneath us as a group.

A BRIEF thank you to the New York City Complaint line might also be nice: (212) NEW-YORK--that's (212) 639-9675. Courtesy of MoveOn.org.

RE: BRIEF Thank You
NYC Complaint line (212-639-9675) suggested that Thank You messages can be
EMAILED to the Mayor's office via their Contact Form:
http://www.nyc.gov/portal/site/nycgov/menuitem.bd08ee7c7c1ffec87c4b36d501c789a0/index.jsp?doc_name=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nyc.gov%2Fhtml%2Fmail%2Fhtml%2Fmayor.html
OR
TEXTED to 311-692
I think that the more brief positive feedback they get, the more likely they are to continue working peacefully with OWS. And, just think: millions of polite Thank You's might finally compel the press to report some GOOD news for once :-)
