PROTESTERS MAKE PLANS FOR ARRESTS TO PROTEST UNJUST LAW
The recent passage of HB2638/SB2508 by the Tennessee State Legislature bans unauthorized camping on state-owned property, making it a Class A misdemeanor criminal offense. The penalty is a maximum sentence of 11 months and 29 days in jail and/or a maximum fine of $2,500. This law also subjects items associated with camping to seizure and forfeiture. Many crimes which have real victims, like DUI, assault, or leaving the scene of an accident, carry equal or much lesser penalties.
Lawmakers have testified that this bill was written to target Occupy Nashville specifically. Occupy Nashville is the local arm of Occupy Wall Street, a worldwide political protest aimed at removing corporate influence and corruption from the political process.

Due to the passing of HB2638/ SB2508, Occupations across the state Tennessee will be subject to immediate arrest, their property confiscated and destroyed, and charged with a Class A Misdemeanor punishable by up to 11 months, 29 days in jail and a $2,500 fine for exercising their First Amendment Rights.
However it is not only the Occupy movement and the First Amendment that is under fire. When passed into law your favorite recreational areas such as lakes and parks across all of Tennessee will be required to enforce the “no camping” bill making it illegal for ANYONE to pitch a tent, cook a meal, or sleep on tax payer funded state owned property.
Outdoorsmen, hunters, fishermen, hikers, even boy and girl scouts will be affected by this egregious law that will make them criminals for the use of the land and properties their tax dollars pay to operate and maintain. As well the homeless will be further marginalized, and now criminalized, on the tax payers’ dime for seeking shelter from the elements on any public property owned by the state.
We ask that you help us fight this bill by donating to our legal defense fund, helping to keep us out of jail and on the streets protesting against the corporate corruption in our government that makes these laws possible.
We Are Occupy Nashville, We Are The 99%.
